What is covered in this training series?

This training series dives deep into the mental ray renderer for XSI 7. Advanced techniques are covered for rendering out production scenes, designed to teach the user how to take advantage of the many powerful features of this industry standard renderer. Traditional methods of direct and indirect illumination are shown in explicit detail, including the use of Global Illumination and Final Gathering. Also covered are new features of the latest version of mental ray that is integrated with XSI 7, including new shaders such as Photographic Exposure, Portal Lights, and more. With the release of XSI 7, mental ray now comes with Importons which are also covered in this training product, as well as how to use Importons for production. You will be shown how to use different professional techniques for lighting both photorealistic scenes, and projects that require more artistic freedom to achieve a desired look. Among the new features also covered in XSI 7, is the new Ambient Occlusion Caching and much more.



Who is this training series for?

This training product is the most expansive mental ray training product ever created for SOFTIMAGE|XSI. The goal of this training product is to teach mainly advanced production techniques for use by artists already familiar with XSI. It also teaches new features found only in XSI 7 with the latest integration of mental ray 3.6.
This training is recommended for users already familiar with the basics of rendering with mental ray in XSI or in any 3d package that uses mental ray. If you have already finished our beginner mental ray training, “Introduction to mental ray in SOFTIMAGE|XSI”, then “Rendering with SOFTIMAGE|XSI v.I: mental ray 3.6” is the next step in your training.

Please note that although a lot of the advanced production techniques shown in this training product can be applied to older versions of XSI, there are new features also shown in this training product that will require XSI 7 to use. Also, the project files and assets that are included with this training product require XSI 7.
